Tarot birth card

Find your tarot birth card

Your tarot birth card comes from your birth date. Add the month, the day and the full year, then add the digits of that total until you reach 22 or less. That number is one of the 22 Major Arcana cards, and it stays yours for life. Many people get two.

Your birth date

Nothing is saved and nothing is sent. The adding happens on your own screen.

The adding

  1. 1 + 1 + 1990 = 1992
  2. 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21
  3. 2 + 1 = 3
Your birth card

Your birth card is The World

The World is your personality card

The part of you people meet first.

You finish the circle. The World dances inside the wreath with all four corners watching. People with this card close things properly. You want the whole of it: the trip, the skill, the story with its ending. Half done sits badly with you.

What it gives you
You see how the whole thing fits together.
What it asks of you
Let a small thing be enough sometimes.

The Empress is your soul card

The part you are working on from the inside.

You make things grow. The Empress is the card of the garden, and that means any garden: a home, a project, a friend group, a body of work. People with this card give a lot and give it warmly. Things get greener around you because you are there.

What it gives you
You make people and ideas feel safe enough to grow.
What it asks of you
Pour some of it back into you.

What is a tarot birth card?

A tarot birth card is the Major Arcana card your birth date adds up to. It is yours for life, so it reads more like a character than a forecast. Your card of the day tells you about today. Your birth card tells you how you tend to move, year after year. Angeles Arrien set the method out in 1987, and Mary K. Greer built on it, which is why most readers use the same sums you will see below.

How to find your tarot birth card, step by step

Add three numbers, then keep adding digits until you land on 22 or less. It takes about a minute on paper.
  1. 1Write your birth date as three numbers: the month, the day and the full year. 15 March 1972 is 3, 15 and 1972.
  2. 2Add them together. 3 + 15 + 1972 = 1990.
  3. 3Add the digits of that total. 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19.
  4. 4If you are still above 22, add the digits again. Stop the moment you reach 22 or less.
  5. 5Match the number to the card. 19 is The Sun, so The Sun is your birth card.
  6. 6If your number is 10 or more, add its digits one more time for your second card. 19 gives 10, the Wheel of Fortune, and 10 gives 1, The Magician.

Why some people get two or three cards

Because the adding does not stop at the first card. If your number is 10 or higher it reduces again, and that second card sits underneath the first. Around four people in ten end up with two cards, and about one in twenty gets three. The first card is the one other people meet. The second is the one you are working on inside. The third, when it turns up, is the lesson that keeps coming back.

Birth card and life path number: what is the difference?

They start from the same birth date and stop in different places. Your life path number reduces all the way to a single digit, or stops at 11, 22 or 33. Your birth card stops at 22 and hands you a picture instead of a number. Plenty of readers work out both and read them side by side, because one gives you a shape and the other gives you a face.

All 22 birth cards and what they mean

Every Major Arcana card below can be a birth card. The Magician is the one exception: the adding can never land on 1, so it only ever arrives as a second card. Tap any card for its full upright and reversed meaning.

  • The FoolThe Fool

You were born to start things. The Fool does not wait for the whole path to be clear. It steps, and the path shows up under the foot. People with this card keep something open in them that most adults let close. Safe things bore you. New things wake you up.

    What it gives you
You can begin again at any age.
    What it asks of you
Finish one thing before you chase the next.
  • The MagicianThe Magician

    The Magician

    ISecond card only

You turn ideas into real things. The Magician has all four tools on the table and knows which one to pick up. This card never lands first, so it always sits underneath. It is the quiet engine: the part of you that says a thing out loud and then goes and builds it.

    What it gives you
What you focus on gets made.
    What it asks of you
Pick one thing. Your power leaks when you split it.
  • The High PriestessThe High Priestess

You know things before you can explain them. The High Priestess sits between the two pillars and does not rush to speak. People with this card read a room fast. You often have the answer early and sit on it until you are sure. That waiting is not shyness. It is how you work.

    What it gives you
You hear the quiet answer under the loud one.
    What it asks of you
Say it sooner. Your knowing helps nobody in silence.
  • The EmpressThe Empress

You make things grow. The Empress is the card of the garden, and that means any garden: a home, a project, a friend group, a body of work. People with this card give a lot and give it warmly. Things get greener around you because you are there.

    What it gives you
You make people and ideas feel safe enough to grow.
    What it asks of you
Pour some of it back into you.
  • The EmperorThe Emperor

You build the frame that holds things up. The Emperor sits still on a stone throne while everything moves around him. People with this card are the ones others lean on. You like a plan. You like knowing who does what. Order is not cold for you. It is how you care.

    What it gives you
You make things solid and safe.
    What it asks of you
Let a little of it stay loose.
  • The HierophantThe Hierophant

You pass things on. The Hierophant is the teacher card, and teaching here is wide: you explain, you guide, you keep what works and hand it forward. People with this card love a good tradition and love breaking a bad one. You need to know why a rule exists.

    What it gives you
You make hard things simple for other people.
    What it asks of you
Keep asking whose rule it is.
  • The LoversThe Lovers

You are shaped by what you choose. The Lovers is not only about romance. It is about standing in front of two roads and taking the one that matches who you say you are. People with this card feel choices in the body. A wrong yes sits heavy in you for days.

    What it gives you
You know when something is truly yours.
    What it asks of you
Choose. An open door is not a free one.
  • The ChariotThe Chariot

You move. The Chariot holds no reins and still goes straight, which is exactly how you get where you are going: by will rather than by force. People with this card set a direction and lean into it. You are at your best when there is somewhere to be.

    What it gives you
You keep going when other people stop.
    What it asks of you
Check the direction before you speed up.
  • StrengthStrength

Your power is gentle. Strength closes the lion's mouth with bare hands and a soft face. People with this card do not win by pushing. You stay calm while something is loud, and the loud thing settles. That is not weakness held back. It is a different kind of force.

    What it gives you
You calm what other people fight.
    What it asks of you
Be gentle with your own lion too.
  • The HermitThe Hermit

You go inward for the light, then carry it back out. The Hermit stands alone on the summit with a lantern. People with this card need real time by themselves, not as a break but as a way of thinking. You come back from that quiet holding something useful.

    What it gives you
You see clearly when you are alone.
    What it asks of you
Come back down. The lantern is for other people too.
  • Wheel of FortuneWheel of Fortune

You live in cycles and you feel them turning. The Wheel moves for everyone, and people with this card notice the turn sooner than most. Timing matters to you. Doors open around you at odd moments, and you have learned to walk through them while they are open.

    What it gives you
You catch the moment while it is still open.
    What it asks of you
Hold steady through the low part of the turn.
  • JusticeJustice

You need things to be square. Justice holds the sword and the scales at once, which means seeing clearly and then acting on it. People with this card cannot let an unfair thing sit. You weigh a lot before you speak, and when you speak you mean it.

    What it gives you
    People trust your word.
    What it asks of you
Weigh yourself with the same soft hand you use on others.
  • The Hanged ManThe Hanged Man

You see it from the other way up. The Hanged Man is not stuck, he is choosing to hang there, and the view is different from down there. People with this card pause where others push. Your best answers arrive after you stop trying to force one.

    What it gives you
You find the angle nobody else looked from.
    What it asks of you
Know when the pause is done.
  • DeathDeath

    Death

    XIII

You are built for endings. Death is the card of the clean close, and people with this card go through more of them than most. You can put a thing down that others would drag for years. Every version of you gets replaced by a truer one.

    What it gives you
You can let go and start clean.
    What it asks of you
Grieve the old thing before you name the new one.
  • TemperanceTemperance

You mix things that should not mix. Temperance pours between two cups without spilling, one foot on land and one in the water. People with this card sit between worlds and get them talking. You are the calm in a room of strong flavours.

    What it gives you
You bring things into balance without flattening them.
    What it asks of you
You are allowed to be one strong flavour too.
  • The DevilThe Devil

You know what you want, and you want it hard. The Devil is the card of desire, and of the chain loose enough to lift off over your head. People with this card feel pull strongly: for people, for work, for pleasure. Naming the pull is what keeps it yours.

    What it gives you
You are honest about wanting things.
    What it asks of you
Check which chains you could take off today.
  • The TowerThe Tower

You clear ground fast. The Tower is the flash of lightning that takes the roof off, and people with this card live through more of those than most. You do not fade slowly. You change all at once, and then you build better on the clean floor.

    What it gives you
You are not afraid of the truth arriving.
    What it asks of you
Build slowly after. The ground is still warm.
  • The StarThe Star

You keep the hope. The Star kneels at the water after the storm and pours anyway. People with this card carry a picture of how things could be, and they carry it through the bad part. Others come to you when their own picture goes dim.

    What it gives you
You can see the good version from a long way off.
    What it asks of you
Fill your own cup at the same pool.
  • The MoonThe Moon

You work in the half light. The Moon is dreams, hunches and the path that only shows itself at night. People with this card feel things early and cannot always say why. Your dreams are loud. Your gut is usually right, and it speaks in pictures.

    What it gives you
You read what is under the surface.
    What it asks of you
    Test the hunch in daylight.
  • The SunThe Sun

You warm the room. The Sun is the child on the white horse with nothing hidden. People with this card are easy to be near. You say the plain thing. Joy is not something you wait around for, it is something you bring in with you.

    What it gives you
You make things simple and bright.
    What it asks of you
You are allowed a cloudy day.
  • JudgementJudgement

You hear the call. Judgement is the trumpet and the rising, and people with this card get pulled toward something bigger more than once in a life. You look back, you take stock, and then you answer. Half measures never hold you for long.

    What it gives you
You know when it is time to answer.
    What it asks of you
Look back kindly. The old you was doing their best.
  • The WorldThe World

You finish the circle. The World dances inside the wreath with all four corners watching. People with this card close things properly. You want the whole of it: the trip, the skill, the story with its ending. Half done sits badly with you.

    What it gives you
You see how the whole thing fits together.
    What it asks of you
Let a small thing be enough sometimes.

How to use your birth card

Pick one line from it and say that line every day. A birth card is a lifelong card, so it pays back a lifelong habit far more than a single reading. Many readers keep the card face up on a shelf for a week and watch where it turns up. If you want a line to start from, there are affirmations for every theme, and your card's theme is a good place to begin.
