Shadow Work: How to Start, Gently, With 20 Prompts

✨
By Attraya

Shadow work is the practice of looking, with kindness, at the parts of yourself you usually hide or push away: old hurts, jealousy, fears, the things you judge in others. The idea comes from Carl Jung, who called these hidden parts the shadow. You meet them through journal prompts and honest questions, and you make peace with them, so they stop running your signal from the background.

Key takeaways

  • Your shadow is the parts of you that you hide, deny or judge.

  • Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist, gave it the name.

  • You meet it gently, with journal prompts, one question at a time.

  • Hidden beliefs send a signal too. Seeing them lets you choose a new one.

What is shadow work?

Everyone has a shadow: the parts of ourselves we learned to hide because they did not feel welcome. Anger we were told not to show. Wants we felt guilty about. Old stories like "I'm too much" or "I'm not enough." They don't go away when we hide them. They sit in the background and quietly shape what we choose and how we feel.

Shadow work is turning toward those parts instead of away. You notice them, you get curious about where they came from, and you meet them with compassion. Nothing in you is bad. It is simply asking to be seen.

Where does shadow work come from?

The idea of the shadow comes from Carl Jung, a Swiss doctor of the mind who started his own school of psychology in the early 1900s. He used the word for the side of the personality we do not see in ourselves, often the side we notice strongly in other people. Today shadow work is a popular practice in spiritual and self-growth circles, usually done through journaling.

Why shadow work matters for manifesting

Your signal is not only what you say out loud. It is also what you believe underneath. You can say "I am worthy of love" every morning while a hidden part of you still believes you have to earn it. That mixed signal is why some desires feel stuck.

Shadow work shows you those hidden beliefs, so you can choose new ones on purpose. When you then say your affirmations, the whole of you agrees. That is where limiting beliefs come from, and where they start to change.

How to start shadow work, step by step

  1. πŸ““

    Get a journal

Use a notebook just for this. Writing by hand slows you down and helps the truth come out.

  2. πŸ•―οΈ

    Make it calm and private

Choose a quiet time when no one will interrupt. A candle or soft music can help you settle.

  3. ❓

    Pick one prompt

Choose one question from the list below. Write for five minutes without stopping or judging.

  4. πŸ”

    Get curious, not critical

Ask where the feeling came from and what it was trying to protect. Every part of you had a reason.

  5. πŸ’—

    End with kindness

Close by writing something loving to yourself, or a new belief you choose to keep.

How to make shadow work feel safe

Go slowly. One prompt a day is plenty. Do it at a calm moment, not right before bed if it stirs you up, and always end with something kind: a hand on your heart, a self-love line, a walk. If a memory feels too heavy to hold alone, stop and talk to someone you trust or to a counselor. Shadow work should feel like opening a window, not like falling down a hole.

After shadow work: choose a new belief

Each time you find a hidden belief, write a new one beside it in the present tense: "I have to earn love" becomes "I am loved as I am." Then give the new belief room to grow. Say it every day, put it on your lock screen, and let repeating it on loop make it feel normal. For lines to start with, try these self-love affirmations. And Amplify keeps sending your desires while the new belief settles in.

Tips for shadow work

Go slow

One prompt a day is enough. Depth beats speed.

Notice your triggers

Strong reactions to other people are clues. Write them down and come back to them.

Don't judge what you find

Every hidden part was trying to protect you. Thank it, then choose something new.

Balance it with joy

Follow a shadow session with something that feels good: music, nature, a favorite line.

Ask for support when you need it

Some memories are big. It is a strength, not a failure, to share them with someone you trust.

Shadow work: frequently asked questions

Shadow work is looking kindly at the parts of yourself you usually hide, like old hurts, jealousy or fears, so they stop running your life from the background. You usually do it by writing answers to honest questions in a journal.
